Regulations and Application Procedures

Purpose: The IAGLR Scholarship is awarded annually to promising Ph.D. students who are IAGLR members and whose research is likely to make a significant contribution to the understanding of large lakes. (Students will recover the cost of IAGLR membership as reduced registration fees if they attend the annual meeting.) Funded by IAGLR, the scholarships are intended to promote academic excellence by encouraging young scientists to undertake graduate research in Great Lakes ecosystem health and to enter the field of Great Lakes science.
Number and Value of Awards: Two $2,000 (US) scholarships will be awarded this year. In addition, the scholarship winners will receive a one-year membership in IAGLR, including a subscription to the Journal of Great Lakes Research. The winner(s) will receive the award(s) at the banquet for the annual meeting.
Eligibility: Full-time doctoral students who are registered at a recognized university, who are members of IAGLR, who have not previously received the award and whose proposed research topic is relevant to large lakes are eligible. Students who will graduate during the calendar year of the award are not eligible, nor are students who already hold a major scholarship (>$10,000) at the time of application.
Application Elements: A complete application is composed of three parts:
- A Letter of Application (maximum one page) indicating the following:
- name, address, e-mail, and telephone number of applicant;
- degree sought and estimated time to completion;
- number of months enrolled in current program;
- department and/or school;
- name of major professor;
- A supervising professor's Letter of Endorsement indicating the following:
- name, address, e-mail, and telephone number of major professor;
- statement of student's stage of progress, and anticipated time to completion of degree;
- student's academic ability, aptitude and eligibility.
- A brief title and extended abstract of proposed research (no more than 2 single-spaced pages).
Criteria for Judging: Applications will be judged on the basis of academic excellence, scientific merit, presentation, originality, and contribution to the understanding of large lakes.
Terms and Conditions of Awards: The IAGLR Scholarship will be awarded with the student's prior understanding and acknowledgement
- that an oral presentation of the research will be made at an IAGLR annual meeting
- that a precis of the research, written by the student, will be submitted to IAGLR upon completion of the research. A suitably revised version may be published in the Journal as an Announcement; it may also appear on the IAGLR web site and be circulated by IAGLR for publication in regional environmental newsletters and web sites.
