Summary of IAGLR Special Meeting to Stengthen Science-Policy Connection

IAGLR held a special meeting on June 4 to update people on its grant from The Joyce Foundation to improve communication between Great Lakes scientists and policymakers, and to obtain advice on specific, creative ways to strengthen the science-policy linkage in the Great Lakes Basin. Approximately 20 people attended this meeting.

Following a welcome and introductions, meeting participants received an update from Joe DePinto on IAGLR's success in placing 24 years of the Journal of Great Lakes Research online and in developing an electronic expert directory for policy makers. John Hartig updated meeting participants on a Congressional Briefing held by U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, a science translation document for exotic species (being prepared by Dave Reid, Hugh MacIsaac, John Gannon, Marg Dochoda, Mark Burrows, and John Hartig), and a project being led by Stephen Bocking on strengthening the science-policy linkage for pollution from land use activities.

Following updating participants on progress, a facilitated discussion was held on creative ways to strengthen the science-policy linkage. Considerable discussion occurred and participants provided many excellent suggestions.

All participants agreed that the special meeting was worthwhile. Participants were encouraged to visit IAGLR's website to keep abreast of progress.
