Three-Year Canada-U.S. Effort Assesses the Health of the Detroit River and Western Lake Erie
Over the past 35 years, U.S. and Canadian pollution prevention and control programs have resulted in substantial improvements in environmental quality in the Detroit River and western Lake Erie that have led to dramatic ecological recovery. However, there are also signs of deteriorating conditions. These findings are a result of a three-year study entitled "State of the Strait: Status and Trends of Key Indicators." Nearly 50 organizations and over 75 scientists participated in this three-year effort that compiled long-term trend data on 50 indicators, interpreted the data, translated the science for policy-makers and the public, and helped prepare a comprehensive and integrative assessment of ecosystem health. IAGLR releases Great Lakes Science-Policy Report
Survey findings and recommendations of the Great Lakes Science-Policy Advisory Board are now available in a report titled "Great Lakes Science & Policy: Strengthening the Connection. Report of a Survey of Great Lakes Policy Issues." This report describes the research methods used in IAGLR's Survey of Great Lakes Policy Issues, and it presents survey findings and advisory board recommendations for key issues to guide the association's remaining project activities. IAGLR Special Meeting: Input Sought on Strengthening the Science-Policy Linkage
As a first step under the Joyce Foundation grant, IAGLR conducted the Survey of Great Lakes Policy Issues, which asked Great Lakes organizations to identify and rank high-priority policy issues in the region, and to identify desired information to assist policymakers in decision-making regarding these issues. IAGLR will now convene a kickoff meeting in conunction with the annual conference this June o review the survey results and seek advice on specific issues that could benefit from a strengthened science-policy linkage. IAGLR Board Announces New Grant from Joyce Foundation
IAGLR's Board of Directors is pleased to announce that in December 2000 the association was awarded a $176,500 grant from the Joyce Foundation to improve communication between Great Lakes scientists and policymakers. Among other things, this two-year grant will:

• establish a policy advisory board to guide the project;
• build a web-based directory of IAGLR scientists and researchers to answer questions from policymakers;
• convert all back issues of the Journal of Great Lakes Research into an electronic format for the association's web site;
• participate in a pilot project designed to strengthen the science-policy linkage on three policy issues; and
• develop advice from IAGLR for strengthening the science-policy linkage for the Great Lakes in the future.
