Great Lakes Science Leaders Honored

June 14, 2019

BROCKPORT, NY — The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) honored several professionals this week for their contributions to IAGLR and large lakes science. The following awards were presented at the association’s 62nd Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research in Brockport, New York.

The Lifetime Achievement Award for important and continued contributions to Great Lakes research was awarded to Marty Auer, an internationally recognized scholar and professor emeritus at Michigan Technological University. Auer’s research on filamentous algae (Cladophora) is hailed as among the most significant contributions to Great Lakes research over the past 50 years.

The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award went to Mohiuddin Munawar, who established the Aquatic Ecosystem Health and Management Society 30 years ago at Vallentyne’s urging to promote an ecosystem approach to large lake science, policy, and education. The two worked together closely at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters, where they organized outreach activities for staff and the public. Munawar is the first person in IAGLR’s history to receive the association’s four major awards. The Vallentyne award recognizes important and sustained efforts to inform and educate the public and policymakers on large lakes issues, thereby raising awareness and support for their protection and restoration. Its namesake is long-time IAGLR member and environmental scientist and educator, John R. (Jack) Vallentyne, aka “Johnny Biosphere.”

The Chandler-Misener Award went to Lori Ivan, Benjamin Schmitt, Kenneth Rose, Stephen Riley, Joan Rose, and Cheryl Murphy for their paper “Evaluation of the thiamine dose-response relationship for lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) fry using an individual based model,” published in Journal of Great Lakes Research 44: 1393-1404. IAGLR presents the Chandler-Misener Award annually to the author(s) of the peer-reviewed paper in the most recent complete volume of the journal judged to be “most notable.” Papers are evaluated based on originality, contribution, and presentation. Established in 1974, the award honors D.C. Chandler and A.D. Misener, IAGLR's first presidents.

The Anderson-Everett Award was presented to Robert Heath, professor emeritus at Kent State University. This marks the second time Heath has received the award, given in recognition of his recent service as chair of IAGLR’s Endowment Committee. This award recognizes important and continued contributions to the association over a period of years and honors the efforts of David Anderson and Margaret Everett for their significant early contributions to the association and the Great Lakes.

This year’s Best Associate Editor Award was presented to Craig Stow, NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory. This award is given by the editors of the journal for outstanding support of the review process for the Journal of Great Lakes Research.

The journal editors also designated Richard Ogutu-Ohwayo, National Fisheries Resources Research Institute in Uganda, as recipient of the Best Reviewer 2018 Award For outstanding support of the review process for the Journal of Great Lakes Research.

The Elsevier Early Career Scientist Award went to Jiying Li for the article "Sediment geochemistry and contributions to carbon and nutrient cycling in a deep meromictic tropical lake: Lake Malawi (East Africa)," Journal of Great Lakes Research, 44: 1221-1234. Co-authors include Brown, Erik T., Sean A. Crowe, and Sergei Katsev.
