Bridging Indigenous knowledge systems and western science to protect the Great Lakes

For the past several years, IAGLR has been bringing together Indigenous and western scientists to co-determine how best to work with one another for the good of the lakes and those who rely on them. Now IAGLR is pleased to offer two new resources that have emerged from this collaboration with an Indigenous Nation, a university research group, a provincial government, and an international treaty organization—a special journal issue and recordings from a conference session on bridging knowledge systems.
Patricia Chow-Fraser honored with IAGLR Lifetime Achievement Award

The International Association for Great Lakes Research honored Patricia Chow-Fraser yesterday evening with its 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award—the association's highest accolade. Presented at IAGLR’s 66th Annual Conference on Great Lakes Research, the award recognizes important and continued contributions to the field of Great Lakes research over a period of 20 years or more. Chow-Fraser, a leading coastal wetlands scientist, is a professor of biology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

IAGLR announces Jérôme Marty to lead association

The International Association for Great Lakes Research announces Jérôme Marty as its new executive director. Dr. Marty comes to IAGLR from his role as a project director at the Council of Canadian Academies, an organization in Ottawa, Ontario, working at the interface between science and policy. Dr. Marty has been involved with IAGLR for the past 10 years, including leadership roles managing the association’s annual research conference and serving on the IAGLR Board of Directors, most notably, as president in 2014.
Val Klump receives Lifetime Achievement Award

J. Val Klump, former dean and a professor emeritus of the School of Freshwater Sciences at UW-Milwaukee, received the IAGLR Lifetime Achievement Award—the association's highest accolade—yesterday at its annual award ceremony. Klump is best known for his pioneering work on Great Lakes biogeochemistry, with a focus on how nutrients and carbon are cycled in lakes.

The International Association for Great Lakes Research is proud to announce the debut of the IAGLR Large Lake Champion Award, which recognizes and honors individuals whose work has made significant contributions to sharing the social, economic, and ecological understanding of large lakes of the world. IAGLR looks to pay tribute to the luminaries and rising voices for large lakes that will help shape the association for years to come and pave the way for IAGLR’s future. In the award's inaugural year, we recognize the following IAGLR Large Lake Champions: Patricia Chow-Fraser, Catherine Febria, Abraham Francis, Jim Olson, and Ali Shakoor.

Great Lakes research association honors 2 NOAA GLERL employees with top awards

Two long-time colleagues at NOAA’s Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Ann Arbor received top honors from the International Association for Great Lakes Research. Henry (“Hank”) Vanderploeg, chief of GLERL’s Ecosystems Dynamics Branch, received the IAGLR Lifetime Achievement Award. The John R. (Jack) Vallentyne Award went to Margaret Lansing, GLERL's chief of information services. The awards were presented online early today at IAGLR’s 64th annual Conference on Great Lakes Research.
