The International Association for Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) honored several professionals yesterday for their contributions to large lake science and the association at the virtual IAGLR Awards Ceremony. Awards presented include the Anderson-Everett Award, Editor's Award, publication awards, and the Large Lake Champion Awards.

Jessica Ives, University of Windsor, was presented the Anderson-Everett Award by IAGLR Past President Ed Verhamme. This award recognizes important and continued contributions to the association over a period of years and honors the efforts of David Anderson and Margaret Everett for their significant early contributions to the association and the Great Lakes. Ives currently serves as technical editor for the Journal of Great Lakes Research and served two terms as secretary on the IAGLR Board of Directors, in addition to volunteering for the Publications Committee, International Committee, and the Communications and Outreach Committee.

"Your service to the association has really shown through," noted Verhamme.

Thanking the association, Ives said, "It's not an exaggeration to say IAGLR has been formative in my professional career. I definitely would not be where I am without it and the network of people that I have met while being involved in IAGLR. If anyone is on the fence about getting more involved with IAGLR, I encourage you to do so because it's incredibly rewarding."

This year's recipients of the Chandler-Misener Award for best paper in the Journal of Great Lakes Research in 2021 are Erin S. Dunlop, Mark R. Christie, Rob McLaughlin, and Todd B. Steeves for their paper "Life history evolution of sea lamprey is predicted to reduce the effectiveness of pesticide control." 47(S1):S259-S271. 2021. Established in 1974, this award honors D.C. Chandler and A.D. Misener, IAGLR's first presidents.

Bob Hecky and Stephanie Guildford, editors of the Journal of Great Lakes Research, presented this year's Editor's Awards for outstanding support of the review process for the Journal of Great Lakes Research. The Best Associate Editor Award was presented to Noel Urban, Michigan Technological University. Matthew Kornis, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, received the Best Reviewer Award.

The Elsevier Early Career Scientist Award for the most notable article in the 2021 Journal of Great Lakes research went to Jasmine Mancuso, Oakland University, for the article "Cold and wet: Diatoms dominate the phytoplankton community during a year of anomalous weather in a Great Lakes estuary," Journal of Great Lakes Research 47 (5), 1305-1315. Co-authors include Anthony Weinke, Ian Stone, Sarah Hamsher, Manuel Villar-Argaiz and Bopaiah Biddanda.

Five recipients of the IAGLR Large Lake Champion Award were honored in its inaugural year: Patricia Chow-Fraser, McMaster University; Catherine Febria, University of Windsor; Abraham Francis, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne; Jim Olson, For Love of Water; and  Ali Shakoor, Wayne State University. This award recognizes and honors individuals whose work has made significant contributions to sharing the social, economic, and ecological understanding of large lakes of the world. IAGLR looks to pay tribute to the luminaries and rising voices for large lakes that will help shape the association for years to come and pave the way for IAGLR’s future.
