Great Lakes Science & Policy: Strengthening the Connection

Great Lakes Science & Policy: Strengthening the ConnectionIn December 2000, IAGLR was awarded a $176,500 grant from the Joyce Foundation to improve communication between Great Lakes scientists and policymakers. Among other things, this two-year grant:

  • established a Science-Policy Advisory Board to guide the project;
  • supported a pilot project designed to strengthen the science-policy linkage on three policy issues;
  • built a web-based Expert Directory of IAGLR scientists and researchers to answer questions from policymakers;
  • converted all back issues of the Journal of Great Lakes Research into an electronic format for the association's web site; and
  • developed advice for strengthening the science-policy linkage for the Great Lakes in the future.

This project was undertaken in direct response to IAGLR's Five-Year Plan (1998-2003), which called for the association to increase its outreach to policymakers, among others.
